The Phone Resource allows you to add SIP standard phones to the OnSIP Admin Portal for automatic provisioning. Currently, this feature supports the following phone brands: Polycom, Cisco, Panasonic, Grandstream, and Yealink.
Creating a Phone
In the following example, we will set up a Polycom SoundPoint IP 670.
-
Navigate to the 'Resources' page in the admin portal and click "Create New Resource"
-
From the list of resources choose "Phone" > "Create a new Phone"
-
You should now see a screen that looks something like the image below.
-
MAC Address: Enter the MAC address of the phone.
-
Make: Choose the make of the phone. In this example, it would be Polycom.
-
Model: Choose the correct model number for the phone.
-
GMT Offset: Choose the GMT offset (-5 for the EST, -8 for PST etc.)
-
Company Directory: Check the Company Directory box if you want to include that in the phone. The Company Directory option will download to the phone the name and extension of all the people in your PBX. On Polycoms, this information would then be available via the "Directory" key.
- Easy Transfer: Check Easy Transfer if desired. Easy transfer allows users of most Polycom and some Cisco SPA phones to have faster access to blind transfer soft buttons when on a call.
-
NAT Keepalive: Check NAT Keepalive if needed. This feature uses additional bandwidth and is only necessary in certain situations.
- Enable Web Interface: A phone with an enabled Web Interface is a potential security issue. Enable the Web Interface at your own risk.
-
Phone Password: (For Polycom and Yealink phones only) The passwords of phones are changed from their default values as an added security measure. The password will be displayed below in the phone's summary. If you do not want the boot server to provision a password, select "Create my own password".
-
Custom Digit Map: Enter any custom digit maps. A digit map is an advanced feature of Polycom phones. This feature is unsupported, but more information can be found here.
-
Hit "Next" in the bottom right. You should now see this screen below, which lets you assign users to your lines.
-
Use the pull down menu to associate the phone with the appropriate user. You have the option to add multiple users to phones with multiple line appearances. In most cases, you will be associating one user to one phone.
Concurrent Calls
The Concurrent Calls check box allows that "line" to support up to eight simultaneous calls. If Concurrent Calls is unchecked, that line will only allow a single concurrent inbound call. If subsequent simultaneous calls come in for that line, the phone will turn away the call with a 'busy' signal. OnSIP will then route the call to the "failover" location.
In most cases, you will want to keep Concurrent Calls checked.
-
Choose "Confirm" in the lower right.

Once the phone has been properly configured and the MAC address added to the interface, simply reboot the phone and it will come back up with the user automatically configured. You no longer have to go to the Web interface for the phone.
Factory Reset
Once a phone is up and running with OnSIP, if, for whatever reason, you Factory Reset the phone, you will need to reset the security key on the OnSIP Boot server.
Press the "Reset Key" link to reset the security key on the phone to it's native state. The phone can then generate a new key to use with OnSIP. Use this feature only after performing a Factory Reset on an existing phone.
Note: Pressing this button without Factory Resetting the phone will cause the phone to not be able to read the configuration file and will result in having to factory reset the phone.
Configuring Busy Lamp Field
Note on the screen below that for some phones, you can change the Lines to BLF indicators.
Line 1 cannot be changed to a BLF indicator. All other lines can be turned into BLF indicators by using the left dropdown menu. When you have toggled a line key to a BLF indicator, use the right dropdown to choose the users on your phone system you would like to monitor.
If there is a sidecar available for your phone model, you will see the option to add it. When chosen, the additional button selectors will be visible. If you have more than 1 sidecar attached to your phone, clicking on the arrows at the bottom will allow you to configure your 2nd and 3rd sidecars.
When done, be sure to hit "save".
Configuring BLF by modifying an existing phone in resources
In the "Resources" tab of the admin portal, click on the MAC address of a phone that's already in the OnSIP admin portal and the item will expand. Click on "modify" in the line details section. You should then see something like the image below.
You will be able to toggle between line keys and BLF indicators. If you select "BLF", the user drop-down will display all of the users on your phone system that you can monitor. Remember to hit "save" when you're done.
Once set, reboot the phone for the changes to take effect.
When BLF users' phones are ringing, the buttons will flash. When the BLF user is on the phone, there will be a solid light next to the user. The "BLF" buttons can also be used as a speed dial to the user by pressing them.
Changing Users
It is very simple to move a phone from one user to another. Simply choose to modify the phone and choose the new user(s) for the new line(s) and hit "save". Reboot the phone and the phone will now come up as the new user. You do NOT need to delete and re-add the phone and you do NOT need to Factory Default the phone.
Deleting a Phone
There are only two reasons to delete a phone:
1.) You are selling the phone or otherwise not using it any more in your organization.
2.) New User - The phone has a LOT of BLF settings that will change with a new user. Only then is it faster to delete the phone and re-create it. You WILL have to factory default the phone.
Do NOT use the "Delete" button to "reset" a phone. Simply use the "Factory Reset" button in the Admin portal to reset the security key ONLY when/if you have already used Factory Default on the phone.
Using Easy Transfer
Phones supported at the moment: Polycom Soundpoint IP 450/550/560/650/670, Polycom VVX 500/600/1500, Cisco/Linksys SPA 501/502/504/508/509/525,
When a caller hits the "transfer" button while on a call, the blind transfer option will be presented immediately.
Polycom SoundPoint IP Phones
When a call is active, the "transfer" button will be presented as a soft button.
Selecting the transfer option will present options for Normal (attended) or Blind Transfer.
Polycom VVX Phones
On Polycom VVX phones, an "EasyXfer" button will be visible when on a call.
Pressing it during the call presents the Blind Transfer, and the caller can enter the extension number in the next screen. The call will transfer after the digits are entered.
Cisco/Linksys/SPA-5xx Phones
Cisco SPA-5xx phones will have an easy "transfer" button when on a call. Entering the extension number will transfer the call and disconnect the transferring caller.
