ROBO Calls are automated phone calls that use a computerized autodialer to deliver a pre-recorded or artificial voice message instead of connecting you to a live person. They often use a deceptive tactic called spoofing, which changes the caller ID to display a fake number (frequently matching your local area code) that can trick you into answering.
Robocalls vs. Spam Calls
Though often used interchangeably, they aren't exactly the same:
- Spam Call: A broad term for any unwanted or unsolicited call, which could include a live telemarketer trying to sell you a service.
- Robocall: Specifically relies on automation and pre-recorded messaging.
If you are dealing with a heavy influx of these calls, OnSIP recommends creating an Attendant Menu (with the time out destination as hang up after giving callers two chances to respond) and pointing your Phone Number to the Attendant Menu. Since these calls are not a live person, they will not not be able to press an option to speak with someone.
Register and Report
You can register your phone number(s) on the Do Not Call Registry. If calls continue, you can report to the FTC or FCC.
- Do Not Call Registry: Register your number for free on the National Do Not Call Registry to cut down on legal telemarketers.
- Report persistent abusers: File a formal complaint online with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) or the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) if illegal robocalls continue.
